Training

August 21st, 2022 - August 24th, 2022

The 2022-23 school year began with our annual FIR training led by the Associate Director of Academics, Idriss Njike, with assistance from the Academics & First-Year Experience leadership team. During this time, the FIR team welcomed two new faculty into the cohort, Dr. Bharat Venkat and Dr. José Loya. The team reviewed the UCLA’s 2022-2023 student demographics, discussed best practices for engagement, and brainstorms new opportunities to connect with students in the community. We also experienced a sound bath meditation facilitated by Hedrick Hall ARD, Kaitlyn Keys.

Additionally, FIRs had time to connect with their assigned building community’s professional staff team during training and they worked together to create an engagement plan for the academic year. Programs that were discussed included Grocery Bingo, Trivia Tuesday, First Year Field Trips, and the Undergraduate Research Forum were planned at training.

Grocery Bingo

September 16, 2022

In collaboration with ResLife’s Leadership and Involvement (On Campus Housing Council and Programming Board) team, Faculty-in-Residence hosted Grocery Bingo! Grocery Bingo took place on the third day of move in and served as space for students to engage and win items they may have forgot to pack such as cleaning supplies or spare bedding. There were also larger tier prizes. Carnesale Palisades was a full house and students stayed for the whole event! FIRs had a good time hosting and providing commentary throughout the event. In total, 510 students attended Grocery Bingo!
